Innovative Programming at Fishkill - Renewable Energy Math: In Network GED math classes, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry are studied in relation to renewable energy and energy efficiency. With algebra we examine the order of operation; a BPI auditor has to make many calculations such as determining minimum ventilation rates for a weatherization project. With Geometry participants examine length, area, and volume. The total number of PV panels, measured in centimeters, must be determined as to how many can be fit onto a southerly orientated roof that is measured in feet and inches. With trigonometry using known ground distances and angles we can determine tree heights for proper wind turbine. There is a language to math, and at the Fishkill Network Program that language is being studied in a way that will allow individuals to gain understanding of the new green economy.

Otisville is home to the From Prison with Love initiative: Each day in the NetworkCommunity Day room at Otisville about 30 incarcerated men, for the mostly from communities in New York City, use their free time to sit down and take up yarn and needles to crochet squares in pastel colors. These delicate squares are then sewn by the men into magnificent baby blankets to be sent to underprivileged new mothers struggling with poverty, some with HIV/AIDS, or living in areas ravaged by natural disasters. No one has told them they must do this. The men chose the project and bring much love to it. “Networkers” have come to understand the truth of Gandhi’s teaching that the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.
