On May 21, Network Co-Executive director Thorin Daye was introduced to Tony Hillery, founder of Harlem Grown. The Church of Heavenly Rest supports both organizations with volunteers, program and financial support. Tony Hillery introduced NetworkSSI to Northern Manhattan Perinatal Partnership (NMPP), a Harlem based organization supporting approximately 500 women annually with a wide range of perinatal services. MNPP also supports youth and fatherhood programs. NMPP was impressed with the quality of the blankets and especially the fact that the men at Otisville created this program to help the most vulnerable members of our society. They want to eventually visit Otisville to meet the crocheters and say thank you. Heavenly Rest has been invited to go along with NMPP when the blankets are distributed. There are between 25-40 births each month attended to by this almost 25 year old agency.
NETWORK HOLIDAY REUNION
FROM PRISON WITH LOVE: A COMMON THREAD
The Church of Heavenly Rest Prison Ministry hosted a day of service where crocheted squares made by the men of Otisville Correctional Facility were joined with crocheted squares made by parishioners of the Church to create beautiful baby blankets for donation to Harlem Grown, a local grassroots organization, serving homeless families in Harlem. The men of Otisville also crocheted six all white blankets which were donated to six churches in Harlem for babies to be baptized in.
